Tarraco Amphitheatre
The Roman Amphitheatre is one of the most beautiful places to seen in Tarragona. It was built ant the late 2nd century AD, and during Roman times it was intended for gladiatorial and fierce fights and public executions.
A part of the stone stands surrounding the sand is now preserved. You can also access to the interior to see the vaults and the remains of the church of Santa María de Miracle.
Roman Circus
Next to the Amphitheatre, the circus is one of the two main constructions of the Roman Empire in the city. This enclousure, dating from the first century AD, was used for car racing.
Today it is one of best preserved circuses in Europe, where you can see a part of the stands and three of the interior vaults.
Cathedral of Tarragona
In the Plaza de la Seu you can find the Cathedral of Santa Tecla, built in 1171 in Romanesque style. It is currently Gothic style.
It stands out for the main door in Gothic style with ogive arches, several sculptures o th apostles and one of the Virgen del mainel. Inside you can see the Chapel of the tailors, the High Alter, the wooden altarpiece dedicated to the patron saint of the city, the Diocesan Museum and the cloister.
Forum Square
The Forum Square is located in the old provincial forum of Roman times. It occupied a space of 300 metres long and 200 metres wide and was surrounding by porticos, of which a piece can be seen today.
It is one of the square with most atmosphere of the city and it is perfect to have a drink in one of tis numerous terraces.
Rambla Nova
La Rambla Nova is one of the most famous streets in the city. You can take a complete tour from the Balcó del Mediterrani, a viewpoint located 40 meters high with incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea.
During the walk of almost two kilometres along the rambla, you will pass by different monuments among which the dedicated to Roger de Llúria, the heroes of 1811 who fought against the French troops and the Castellers.
Walls of Tarragona
Walking the Archaeological Promenade, just over a kilometre by the old wall of Tarraco from the 2nd century B.C. is another of the best things to do in Tarragona.
This wall is the oldest Roman construction outside Italy and reached 3,500 meters in length being its walls reinforced during the 16th and 17th centuries to withstand attacks with more modern weapons and better protect the city.
To access this walk you will have to leave the old part of Tarragona by the Portal del Roser.
Aqueduct of Les Ferreres
The Aqueduct of Les Ferreres or Pont del Diable is located 3 kilometres from the centre. What you see today is just a piece of the first century B.C. aqueduct that carried water from the Francolí river to the Roman city of Tarraco.
This section is perfectly preserved and you can see the two levels of overlapping arches that reach a maximum height of 27 meters.
In addition to contemplating it, you can also climb to the top and travel the more than 200 meters of the bridge.
